Quantum Computing is the use of quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement to perform unimaginably fast computation that can decipher problems that were once thought unsolvable. A quantum computer is said to have reached quantum supremacy (or quantum advantage), when it can solve a problem that no classical computer can solve in any feasible amount of time.
While it is very difficult to predict all the future use cases for quantum computing (just like it was near impossible to predict how classical computers would impact every aspect of our lives), fields with optimization problems and those that require complex simulation, will reap huge benefits from such a technology. Early applications for the world’s first commercial quantum computers, therefore, will presumably include: artificial intelligence, cryptography, cybersecurity, design optimization in manufacturing, drug design and development, financial modeling, grid optimization, weather forecasting, traffic and logistics optimization – amongst others.
