Autonomous Vehicles are self-driving cars, and other driverless vehicles, that are capable of sensing their surroundings and moving safely with little or no human intervention. Autonomous vehicles utilize a combination of sensors such as radar, lidar, sonar, GPS, odometry and inertial measurement units. Then, advanced control systems interpret sensory information to identify appropriate navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage.
Once autonomous vehicles become widely dispersed, they are certain to have a disruptive impact on society. Road safety, traffic congestion, urban planning, labor markets, quality of life, insurance implications, energy consumption and the environment, are all components of society – amongst others – that will be profoundly impacted by the adoption of self-driving vehicles.
